An international visitor to Mount Langi or for that matter Australia, can often be excused for thinking the guidebook got it wrong when they said English was the national language, particularly when rhyming slang kicks in. “Skin and Blisters” is simply rhyming slang for sisters, as “Noah’s Ark” is for shark, “billy lids” for the kids, or “Captain Cook” for having a look. One day four young girls, all sisters actually, put their heads together and cooked up a pretty special birthday present for their father who was away in Europe. The present was a unique idea wrapped up in a great design and the father was legendary winemaker Trevor Mast. Owner and winemaker at Victoria’s Mount Langi Ghiran, world famous for its Langi Shiraz, Trevor had a vineyard growing on the slope behind the family home in the cool climate, picturesque Grampians region of Victoria.
While he was away the sisters got together and with the help of the eldest daughter Daliah, a graphic designer, they created a label which depicts each one of them – from the left they are Sophie, Anja, Daliah and Ineke.
When Trevor returned home from his overseas trip he was surprised and delighted to receive a mock up of the wine label and his daughters’ plans for a wine aptly named Four Sisters.
Initially the concept of the birthday present was for a small production wine distributed to family, friends and a few select Melbourne restaurants. What happened is quite the opposite.
Four Sisters has grown into a very successful wine over the last three years. The original Melbourne restaurants that were fortunate enough to get a few cases of the first batch received a response from their customers that was never anticipated. More and more people tried and liked the wines and the original story behind the label. With a highly successful sauvignon blanc semillon and a new shiraz, Four Sisters has become a successful brand in spite of its very humble beginnings.
