Domain Engel is a family business where three generations of winegrowers are associated around Mr. Fernand Engel, founder of company. We are our own producers, which means we only sell wines coming from our vine production and winemaking.
The enterprise is conveniently situated on the Alsace Wines Road, near the well-known Haut-Koenigsbourg castle.
Our Vineyards
The vineyard covers 40 hectares around six villages. The geology of the plots is a genuine mosaic, made up of limestone, granite, gneis, calcareous – sandstone and marly – limy soils. Such a variety of a soils brings out the best in each different grape type.
Bernard, Fernand Engel’s son, is in charge of the work in the vineyards. He puts a lot of efforts in improving the quality of the fruits. The production yeild is very well controlled in order to increase both concentration and maturation level in grapes. The harvest is only made by hand so that the grapes are only lightly damaged. During ripening, we control the sugar rate and the total acidity in the grapes every week in order to find the right day for harvesting. The grapes have to be well matured for a better quality.
Our Winemaking
In the cellar, Xavier, Bernard Engel’s son-in-law and oenologue, concentrates on the production of our wines. The grapes coming from many soils are pressed and dispatched in separated vats. A qualitative harvest (by hand, well-matured and selected grapes) allows us to limit technical operations on the wines. Our wines stay in contact with the dead yeasts for a few months to develop roundness and opulence. We use a few technical innovations like pneumatic and hermetic press as well as computerised temperature control. So we can both increase aromatic expression in the wines and prevent wine from bacteria.
Our constant efforts to improve quality reinforce the sucess of our wines. The winery produces 25,000 cases per year with 2000 cases being imported into the United States.
About 15000 customers per year visit the winery and enjoy discovery of our wines. Danielle and Sandrine will help you to discover the diversity and the elegance of our wines. A memorable moment.
